Who are your biggest influences?
The obvious ones first — the artists who built dancehall long before I ever picked up a mic. But honestly, just as much influence came from sound system culture itself, not any one artist. Growing up around that energy shaped how I think about a record more than any single name did.
What’s your writing process actually like?
It rarely starts with lyrics. Usually it’s a riddim or a feeling first — something in the rhythm that suggests a mood, and the words come from chasing that mood down. If I try to force lyrics onto a beat that hasn’t told me anything yet, it usually falls flat.
Do you write every day?
Not every day, no — and I used to feel guilty about that until I accepted it’s not how this works for me. Some weeks are all writing. Some weeks are all listening, absorbing, living. Both matter. The listening weeks usually pay off more than people expect.
What’s the hardest part of doing this independently?
Wearing every hat at once. One hour you’re an artist, the next you’re answering emails, then you’re figuring out a merch shipment, then you’re back in the booth. Nobody warns you how much of independent artistry is just logistics.
What’s a common misconception about dancehall?
That it’s one thing. People outside the culture sometimes flatten it into a single vibe or a single era, when really it’s constantly shifting — decade to decade, artist to artist. What’s happening in dancehall right now sounds nothing like what was happening ten years ago, and that’s the point.
What do you want people to take away from your music?
That you don’t have to choose between where you’re from and where you’re going. That’s really the whole thesis behind everything I’m building — the name, the sound, all of it.
