The Case for a Single First
A single is lower risk, lower cost, and lower commitment — it lets you test how your sound lands before investing time and money into a full project. If your audience is still small or you’re still finding your sound, a single gives you room to learn what actually connects without betting everything on one release.
The Case for an EP
An EP gives listeners more reason to stay engaged once they find you — one song might catch attention, but three or four gives them a fuller picture of who you are as an artist. EPs also give algorithms and playlist curators more surface area to work with; if one track doesn’t land, another might.
The Real Deciding Factor: Where’s Your Audience?
If you’re starting from close to zero listeners, a single makes more sense — you want fast feedback and lower financial risk while you’re still building. If you already have a warm audience actively waiting for more, an EP can capitalize on that attention more effectively than spacing out multiple singles.
A Middle Path: Singles That Build Toward an EP
A common independent-artist strategy: release 2–3 standalone singles first, each one building audience and data on what’s working, then compile them (plus a bonus track or two) into an EP later. This gets you the low-risk testing of singles with the longer-term payoff of a cohesive project down the line.
