This is one of the most common questions from artists releasing their first song — and the honest answer is: longer than most people expect if you don’t plan ahead.
Distribution Processing Time: 5–7 Business Days (Minimum)
Most distributors state 5–7 business days as their standard turnaround, though it can stretch longer around holidays or during high-volume periods. Some offer expedited processing for an extra fee if you’re in a genuine time crunch, but that shouldn’t be the default plan.
Add Time for Mixing and Mastering
If your track isn’t finished yet, add however long that process takes — anywhere from a few days with a fast-turnaround engineer to a couple of weeks if you’re being thorough (and you should be). This step happens before you even submit to a distributor.
Add Time for Pre-Save and Promotion Setup
To actually benefit from a pre-save campaign, you want it live at least 1–2 weeks before release — which means factoring that window into your submission timeline, not treating it as an afterthought once the song is already processed.
Realistic Total Timeline: 3–5 Weeks
Working backward from a target release date: 1–2 weeks for final mixing/mastering and artwork, 1–2 weeks of pre-save and promotion buildup, and 5–7 business days for distribution processing — with some of that overlapping. Three to five weeks total is realistic for a properly planned first release, not the “upload it and it’s live tomorrow” assumption a lot of new artists start with.
Can You Rush It?
Technically yes, with expedited distribution options — but rushing skips the parts that actually make a release perform well: pre-save buildup, playlist pitch deadlines, and promotional runway. A rushed release often underperforms one that took the full timeline, even with the same song.
Plan the Whole Timeline, Not Just the Upload
Getting a song “live” and getting a song properly launched are two different things. The full release timeline — including exactly when to do what — is laid out step by step in the Dancehall Release Guide.
