Why a Roundup Series
Dancehall moves fast. A riddim that’s everywhere one month can fade by the next, replaced by something nobody saw coming. Staying plugged in means paying attention constantly, not just catching whatever crosses your feed by accident. This series is meant to do some of that work for you — and give newer artists, myself included, a place in the conversation alongside the names that already dominate it.
The Artists Still Setting the Standard
Any real conversation about where dancehall is right now has to start with the artists who’ve defined the modern sound over the last several years — voices like Vybz Kartel, Popcaan, Mavado, and Alkaline, whose influence still runs through nearly everything newer artists are building on. Their catalogs are the reference point most of the genre gets measured against, whether directly or not.
The Artists Pushing the Sound Forward Now
Alongside them, a newer generation — names like Valiant, Teejay, Skillibeng, and Chronic Law — has been reshaping what a dancehall hit sounds like, often blending the genre’s core energy with production choices borrowed from hip-hop, Afrobeats, and UK sounds. That blend is a big part of why dancehall keeps finding new listeners outside Jamaica without losing its identity at home.
What to Actually Listen For
Rather than chasing individual songs that’ll be outdated by the time you read this, pay attention to the riddims themselves — a strong riddim often outlives any single vocal on it, getting reused and reworked by different artists for months or years afterward. Following a riddim’s journey across different voices tells you more about where the culture’s heading than any single chart position does.

VP Records’ official dancehall playlists (Spotify and Apple Music) update weekly and are one of the most reliable ways to catch new releases without digging through dozens of individual channels. Pairing that with a rotating cast of independent DJ mixes on SoundCloud gives a pretty complete picture of the current landscape.
